As especies frutiferas observadas foram as seguintes: abacate (Persea americana Mill), banana (Musa cavendishii Lambert), cacau (Theobroma cacao L.), caqui (Diospyros kaki L.), coco (Cocos nucifera L.), Figo (Ficus carica L.), goiaba (Psidium guajava L.), garviola (Anona muricata L.), Laranja (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck), mamao (Carica papaya L.), maracuja (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Deg), nespera (Eriobotrya japonica Lindley),...

Composition and structure of the fig wasp community in Amazonia Acta Amazonica
CASTRO,Raquel Ribeiro de Souza; REZENDE,Alinne Costa Cavalcante; ROQUE,Rosemary Aparecida; JUSTINIANO,Silvia Cassia Brandão; SANTOS,Otilene dos Anjos.
An understanding of the complex ecological interaction between fig wasps and their host plants in Amazonia requires previous knowledge of their distribution and diversity. The objective of this study was to describe the composition and structure of the wasp community associated with four species of Ficus in the municipal area of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. A total of 600 syconia from four species were collected. The study species were: Ficus obtusifolia Kunth; Ficus citrifolia Mill; F. americana subspecies guianensis Desv. form mathewsii; and F. americana subspecies guianensis Desv. form parkeriana. Statistical analyses were used to examine the relationship between fig wasp diversity and syconium diameter, and the effect of non-pollinating wasps on numbers...

In memoriam Prof. Dr J.T. Wiebes (1931-1999), evolutionary biologist and systematic entomologist Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van; Achterberg, C. van.
Born on 13 September 1931 in Rotterdam, Jacobus Theodorus [Koos] Wiebes read biology at Leiden University where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1963 on studies of Indo-Australian fig wasps. He started working on spiders (Lycosidae, Pisauridae) and beetles (Carabidae, Cetoniidae, Helodidae), but he earned his scientific reputation as a specialist in fig wasps (Hymenoptera: Agaonidae, Torymidae), their parasitoids and intricate host relationships (1961-1994: 89 papers). He served for many years on the staff of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden (1955-1970, initially as assistant, later as curator of Coleoptera and as assistant director since 1965), to return as director of the newly merged national zoology and geology museums (ad interim 1982-1984,...

Variation in the nocturnal foraging distribution of and resource use by endangered Ryukyu flying foxes (Pteropus dasymallus) on Iriomotejima Island, Japan Naturalis
Lee, Y.-F.; Takaso, T.; Chiang, T.-Y.; Kuo, Y.-M.; Nakanishi, N.; Tzeng, H.-Y.; Yasuda, K..
The nocturnal distribution and resource use by Ryukyu flying foxes was studied along 28 transects, covering five types of habitats, on Iriomote Island, Japan, from early June to late September, 2005. Bats were mostly encountered solitarily (66.8%) or in pairs (16.8%), with a mean linear density of 2.5 ± 0.6 bats/km of transect/night. Across the island, however, bat densities were distributed non-randomly among transect-nights, not correlated with transect length, and showed a slightly clumped distribution (variance/mean = 3.3). Outskirt trails contributed higher values to the relative importance of bat abundance, but the highest mean abundances occurred mostly at village sites on the west coast, which on average devoted only a quarter of their land area to...
